Alcohol Awareness Month: Here is why April was selected for the campaign

To educate and inform people about the ill effects of alcohol, Alcohol Awareness Month is observed in April every year in the United States. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) sponsors the event and encourages local communities to come forward and share their struggles against alcohol addiction on the way to recovery.

One of the major reasons for observing Alcohol Awareness Month in April is because the month marks the commencement of prom and graduation season. Many teenagers view this transition as the beginning of a new phase of life and many adolescents celebrate the culmination of “dull routine” of high school by attending parties. Some celebrations may turn dangerous with alcohol readily available for underage drinkers. Little do adolescents realize that the excitement of prom might take a dangerous turn due to alcohol.

Alcohol-related traffic accidents high during prom season

The rite of passage to adulthood is often also marked by the perilous combination of drinking and driving. According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), titled “Teen Drinking and Driving,” teen drivers are at a three times greater likelihood than experienced drivers of being involved in a fatal crash as consumption of any kind of alcohol simply aggravates the risk factor for teenagers. As per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), one among three youths, aged under 21, dies in an alcohol-related accident during graduation or prom season.

Easy availability of alcohol is a major concern. House parties or prom celebrations are an easy way to use alcohol. A report by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) indicates alcohol is easily available at homes and teenagers have easy access to alcohol through family members.

Alcohol and unsafe sex under its influence

Under the influence of alcohol, teens can often tread the wrong path on a prom night. Alcohol can often cloud their sense of judgment and push them toward dangerous choices like unsafe sex. Movies promoting the idea of sex on a prom night also play a role in prompting teenagers and young adults to indulge in risky sexual behavior under the influence of alcohol.

Teenagers’ conscious choice to act risky has resulted in the rising number of cases of sexual cases and other crimes. Influence of alcohol might be a reason for date rapes among the youth – a major concern among parents. It is important for parents to have frequent discussions about the dangers of alcohol and other addictive substances. Parents need to ensure that the alcohol at home is inaccessible to their wards.

On way to sobriety

It takes a lot of courage, determination and strength to seek help for recovery from an addiction. The journey to become sober might be fraught with challenges like withdrawal symptoms, relapse or inclination to stop treatment halfway, but one must not lose sight of the ultimate goal of complete recovery from alcohol dependence.
