What to Bring

Sovereign Health’s Adolescent Program in Rancho San Diego wants to ensure that your teen’s stay is safe and conforms to the standards of the program. This list is made with your privacy, safety and well-being in mind. If you have any questions, please contact our admissions team.

Sovereign Health of Rancho San Diego’s adolescent program provides treatment for mental health disorders, substance abuse and co-occurring conditions, and eating disorders. Please note the below list is not all-inclusive, and management reserves the right to send back any property that does not comply with the facility’s protocol. Upon admission, all luggage will be searched and inventoried.

Please bring the following items:

  • Only one suitcase and one carry-on item
  • Clothing for 10 days (laundry facilities located on site and are free of charge)
  • Minimal makeup (NO glass or mirrored compacts)
  • Comfortable, casual clothes
  • Walking shoes/tennis shoes for hiking and physical activity, sandals or shower shoes
  • Socks and undergarments (several pairs)
  • Gym attire that is NOT form-fitting (NO compression shorts, leggings, yoga pants)
  • Joggers, sweat pants, basketball, soccer pants or appropriate shorts
  • One-piece swimsuit (no bikinis), swim trunks (no Speedos)
  • Jacket, sweatshirt or heavy sweater (for outdoor use and cooler evenings)
  • Bathrobe, slippers and pajamas (cannot be worn around campus)
  • Social Security, insurance and identification cards
  • Long pants for equine therapy
  • MP3 player or iPod with no camera or Wi-Fi access

Do NOT bring:

  • Clothing that depicts or promotes the use of alcohol, drugs, sexual content, tobacco, gang affiliation or inappropriate images
  • Any hygiene items (all products are provided; any special hygiene products outside of what we provide must be medically cleared)
  • Over-the-counter medications, unless approved for a specific condition
  • Drugs or drug paraphernalia, lighters, alcohol, weapons, tobacco or e-cigarettes
  • Cameras, cellphones, laptop computers, electronic handheld devices, etc.
  • Any sharp objects, mirrors, writing supplies, nail polish, spiraled notebooks
  • Razors
  • Perfume, cologne, body spray or aerosol containers
  • Radio/stereo with external speakers (headphones must be used)
  • Clothing with holes, sheer clothes, crop tops, spaghetti straps, high heels, bandanas, bikinis, compression shorts/bras, leggings, yoga pants or tight-fighting thin materials
  • Clothing that exposes midriff, cleavage, buttocks or undergarments
  • Pens (gel pens) or mechanical pencils
  • Pets or minors


Please attempt to bring a 30-day supply of prescription medications. If you are due for a refill, please go to the pharmacy prior to admittance. The prescription bottles need to have the prescribing information on the bottle. If you have any addictive prescription medications, you are requested to bring those, as well.

If you are taking any supplements or vitamins, they must be in sealed containers. All medications and supplements will need to be reviewed and approved by our treatment team before use at Sovereign Health.

Optional recommended items:

  • Journal (non-spiraled), composition book or sketch pad
  • Personal address book, stationery, stamps and books
  • Sunglasses (nonexpensive)
  • Reading materials (books are available but you may want to bring your own)
  • Pictures of family or friends (NO metal or glass frames)
  • Beach towel
  • Pillow (bedding, including pillows, are provided, but patients might want to bring their own pillows)

To family members:

  • The assigned Case Manager and treatment team for your loved one will be in contact with you during the first week of treatment
  • Any items you wish to mail may be sent to the clinical suite at Sovereign Health, 2815 Steele Canyon Road, El Cajon, CA 92019
  • All packages and mail items are searched prior to receipt
  • If there are any specific questions or concerns, you may leave a message with the receptionist during business hours at 619-760-0242

Lead House Managers and Case Managers will retain during stay:

  • Cash or gift cards
  • Any sharp objects or items deemed unsafe
  • Any forms of identification
  • Wallets, purses
  • Any contraband or items not adhering to this policy


No money is required, but a gift card can be left with our intake team for any additional expenses that may come up (i.e., additional undergarments).
